The A Healthy People 2030 goal calls for more states, territories, and the District of Columbia that ban smoking in workplaces, restaurants, and bars.12 The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that separating people who smoke from those who don`t, purifying the air, and ventilating buildings is not an effective protection against second-hand smoke.13 June 14, 2022, 29 states, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Marshall Islands, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, and 35 states, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Guam, the Marshall Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, banned smoking in restaurants. Thirty-five states, American Samoa, the District of Columbia, Marshall Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have 100% smoke-free indoor air laws on public and private construction sites.
